i would recomend buying all the pre 64 American coins you can afford. In Germany during the 20s they couldn't buy a loaf of bread with a wheel barrow full of Marks, but could feed their family a few days with a piece of silver or gold.

I bought a half bag of 90% junk silver about a month ago to help weigh down the safe. Silver has gone up about 4 to 5 dollars per/oz since then. Not a bad investment.

These jug are nice because they stack(3-4 high full)

My brother in law called and said that Sunday night, the run-off was so high it took out the water treatment plant where he lives in Wyoming. Consequently they still do not have culinary water.(4 days without) I had given him one of these jugs for Christmas and he said it was getting good use. It just goes to show that you never know what sort of thing might upset the system. "too much water leaves you without any water" So I am reviving this thread!

those jugs are nice i would not mind a couple especially when the power goes out around here when the power goes out it could be awhile it would be nice to have water on hand for the dogs and chickens and what ever it is needed for

I found a place within short driving distance of me that sells food grade 55 gallon plastic barrels for seven bucks a piece. Gotta love Craigslist!

With the gas prices going they way they are it would be wise for everyone to "be prepared" for a catastrophe. America depends on diesel. All our goods are transported via ship, train or truck and the increase in transportation has already jacked the price up on just about everything. This will in turn cause more manufacturers to cut more corners and will cause more good people to desperation and desperate measures. Crime will increase and if it keeps up I don't doubt it will turn to the (every man for himself) type mindset. This country is propelled by greed and no longer pride. be prepared gentlemen.

JC I think you're right about this. I think for a while, this country is going to be a mess. Not right now, but soon. Eventually, we'll adjust. Our lifestyles are going to have to change though. My grandfather died in 1956, at the age of 76. He never owned a car. His whole life was within a few miles of home. Nowadays we think nothing of driving 100 miles or more for some shopping or entertainment. I think we'll see a rebound of things like corner stores and other local businesses. Railroads will be a huge part of transport again. People in the Northeast are not going to eat fresh fruits and veggies all winter. I think it was johnporter who brought up the 25 mile food thing. Farming will be a small family affair again, the way it should be. Sorry for all my ranting, but I think change is coming. It may hurt, but I think it will be OK in the end.

WOW. I'm in a heap of trouble with credit and trying to maintain living the typical "American lifestyle". I make a modestly decent buck and most of my situation is due to my laziness. I think this is the norm here now and you guys are the exception. I grew up struggling and have thought in the past I was owed something. All I can say is WOW. What a jackass. This is an eyeopener that took a pry bar and several full swing kicks to the teeth to open. The sad part is I know most Americans think this way.
My contribution here for now would be this: One thing I remember my mother and father stressing when I was younger was 2 minute showers ( I had 3 Brothers ). If you don't think its possible, try a cold one. Wakes you up REAL good too. A 2 minute shower is a big luxury without running water.
