a day in the woods(pictures)

was out in the woods the other day and stumbled across a Maitake(or hen of the woods mushroom.) these mushrooms are very edible and very tasty here are a couple pictures of it.

these mushrooms include:

1) Fabulous flavor
2) A firm texture that lends itself to almost any culinary application
3) Its usually bug free - at least inside the flesh - you have to pick over it but unless it's over the hill you won't find much in the way of bug larvae
4) Easy to store. Just chop this one up into what ever size pieces you like to cook with and store them in freezer bags in the freezer without any par-boiling, etc.


just saute these babys in butter with some salt and pepper and you've got yourself a real treat ;D

Up in my woods we get Stump mushrooms, Lobster, and Shaggy Mains...Other then these 3 I dont touch any others......I looked at some lobster mushrooms today but they have already been hit by the frost..
