Anyone out there ever try Capelin?
Here in Newfoundland they wash up on shore and are there for the pickin' I recently had the oppritunity to try these little ocean fish. What they do is when the fish are rolling they fill buckets up, take them home and salt them then freeze um. When ever your in the mood for a snack they take out a dozen or so and BBQ um up as is. I personally eat the whole fish, head and all but not everyone has too. They are a great pre meal snack and ya just eat um like chips, def worth trying out!
I'm leaving here and returning home to Nova Scotia in the next weeks and am curious to see if the capelin run there.
I use caplin for mink bait, both fresh and salted. When I was living in Northern Newfoundland, I used mostly smelt or eel. Hard to come by in this area, so I started using caplin and it works well for me. I'll switch to salted caplin when it starts to freese up. For sure, most summers there is no shortage of caplin in Nfld.
