Prepping A New Garden Area This Fall

This Fall I plan on pulling out a fence line full of hostas in my back yard and planting a prepping the soil for a new garden area. The new garden will be approximately 4ft wide by 60ft long. I'll be bringing in some dirt, compost, & composted manure. I dont want to mix any fish parts in there due to my dogs & other critters around the neighborhood that might dig it up. Someone told me that I should spread a light amount of 20-20-20 fertilizer over the whole garden and let that soak in during the Fall & Winter months.
I question I have is "Would this burn the plants after I plant them in the Spring or would it be diluted enough by then and safe enough to plant?

In the Spring, one thing that I'd like to try planting is sweet potatoes but I'll be using compost towers for this in order to save some room in the garden. I'll also be planting a number of other things as well in order to help cut the food bill.
Have any of you tried planting sweet potatoes before and if so, how did you plant them and how did they turn out?

I would think the wintering over would take care of everything for the following spring planting, but, don't hold me to that...

Me, I'm doing the same thing though....getting prepped a 100' X100' area behind the barn for a larger garden next spring. I plan on fencing it in as well to keep the critters out. I had a farmer buddy come down and spread 4 ton of cow poop for me, then tilled it in. I'll till it again in October, then again next year before I plant, and hope for the best. Ground looks good though now

I always use 10-10-10.

I too always use 10-10-10 It might be a good idea to get a soil sample tested to see what you need to add.Its good to have your PH around 7.alittle Garden lime maybe.Potash maybe be good,too.
