Since it's cold here in Maine alot I have a very hard time with growing watermelons. I know, your thinking she's nuts! But there is nothing more frustrating then little melons at the end of the season. Am I right? So, I found a method that works well here for me. I start my seaweed fertilizer in the Fall and come Spring I add it to a never used clean small fish tank half filled with the fertilizer at the end of March. Plant the seeds about 1/4" and cover about 2" apart. Water SPARSELY! Place the solid lid on top (I buy the glass fish tank tops for more light). Place in the light during the rest of winter. Very little need for water for the next month and half til Spring planting season. Simply turn the tank around for even lighting. Watch how fast these plants grow! Remember, too much water will drown the plant and/or rot the soil. The container does the work for you! If it gets too moist, tip the lid off sideways for a few days to help dry it out some. I almost always wait until after Memorial day to transfer outside. If you try this- good luck with it! It works for me!
