Mowing lawn today at one of our rentals I found a homing pigeon .It is the second or third time I have seen one here.its right next to where I work.there are wild ones there and when they get tired or lost I think they come in to the wild ones.
I used to raise these with my dad when I was younger.they have two bands on them .one is an identifying band that the owner puts on when its young and can't come off.the second one is put on for the race, when the pigeon is released he heads home ,when captured at home that race band is taken off and dropped in a sealed clock that stamps the time on a paper.then the owner takes this clock to a meeting place where it is opened ,the time is recorded then there is a mileage adjustment and a winner is announced.its pretty amazing really that they can find there way.
I will post picks of her tomorrow ,hopefully I can find out where she came from and where the race was and how far.once she gets her strength back I can release her and she will head back home.im going to tape a note to her band with my cell number ,hopefully I will hear something.
If you need any help, let me know. It's fairly easy to track band numbers. I raise pigeons myself, but not for racing. I just like to turn em out and watch em fly, and hang around the house.
Yea but what about the times I go through the drive thru and don't have pants on?---Maritimer

My dad raised and raced them when I was a kid, too. Pretty interesting hobby. They'd be taken 500 miles away, and find their way back. How in the heck do they do that? There are some awefully strange things going on, including bird migrations.
I'm really curious as to how this turns out, when you release the bird with the message! ;D

Cam , we used to have tumblers also they were my favorite, they would fly in circles getting higher and higher then all the sudden just tumble head over tail almost to the ground then pull out and fly back up.strangest thing ever,my dad has seen a few not pull out in time and hit the ground .didnt seem to bother them.

I currently have tumblers and a few mixed breeds. Mostly they just roam around but a few tumble. Some hit the ground and are killed immediately. I call them "self culling"!

That's funny.I wish I had room to get some here.my dad and I used to take them out for 15 to 20 mile flights and most of them would beat us home.its just amazing.we used to bet on them if he won I had to do extra wood , if I won I didn't have to do any wood.somehow I always ended up doing wood
We'll I went online like I stated earlier and found the club the pigeon belonged to ,but no one called back.I was just going to get her healthy and release her ,but I think she had some sort of infection .she never really recovered .sadly she was dead yesterday morning when I went out to feed her. I tried my best, but sometimes it's not enough.
