Cold weather indoor project (2/3 progress update)

With the weather as cold as it is this week I figured I'd work on some decoys. Got a couple started today. I have always liked the Upper Chesapeake Bay style decoys. They are very simple but the history behind them is very fascinating to me. I don't have the means to make them out of wood like they traditionally are, so I thought I would try to make some out of foam.

Pretty Neat tommer what kind of foam is the one on the left made out of? Looks like spray foam? ( p.s your caribou has an itchy arse )

The one on the left is made of the layered foam as well. It's just farther along in the process and has been restle coated with saw dust and wood glue.

Cool project. Do you use them in the marsh or do they end up on the mantle?

They get used, just like all my plastic decoys.

I do all the shaping with a knife, then a rasp, and finally sand paper. I would like to get a foredom tool but they are a bit pricey. I might try a dremel to speed up the process.

Have you used these on the water before? I'm curious as to how they will float in the rough water, or are these for the marsh? Looks good either way, and relaxing to make to! A fordem tool saves a lot of work to.

I haven't used these yet but it's the same style that all the the guides use for sea duck hunting on the ocean (although those are wood and these are foam). I attach about a 4 ounce weight to the bottom and they float like a cork. Total weight is just a pound. They ride really high in the water and move around real well. They don't even begin to tip over. If you put them in the water upside down they right themselves faster than plastic decoys.
