Wood shavings and a little DE(Diatomaceous Earth) on the floor, straw in the nesting boxes.

Mine just has a wooden floor(plywood). We don't put anything on it just clean it out in the spring. Nest boxes get some pine needles in them for the eggs to lay in.

My pens are movable and don't have floors. In the winter I do park the layers on the garden and put down 6 to 8 inches of wood chips that get spread around in the early spring.

I use all the credit card application letters that I run through the shredder.

Frugal = 1. Free shredded paper. 2. Free chicken bedding. 3. Free garden fertilizer.

Back when there were geese and chickens on the country side place we use, straw was the bedding for both chickens and geese.

anything that comes my way. a lot of shredded leaves, straw, ground corn cobs. i grind ear corn for feed , cobs and all. the pick out the corn and leave the cob pieces for bedding. grass clippings also. they eat some and they compost the rest.

For now, pine shavings from a local wood crafter.  When that runs out, straw, pine straw from under the trees, or about anything else I can find..

I do take the refuse from when we clean it, and add it to the garden... dump it in the raised beds when they are played out.. add some cow manure and lime, turn over, let set for the winter.
