A woodworking little project for the house

Looking for a "sofa table" and didn't like anything I saw in terms of design or quality.  Digging through my wood pile I found two nice "live edge" walnut boards and a couple of smaller pieces of grey elm.  I always wanted to use the "live edge boards for a special project, and decided this was it.

A rough sketch and a few hours of labor and we now have a unique sofa table.  Leg are angles 5 degrees, but look straight in the picture.  Made a pair of small drawers.  Used water based poly for the first time and I think I like it - dries VERY fast, and seems hard enough.

Only catch in the project is I need to replace the bearing on the saw arbor before I can begin my next project - when they go, they go.  Not looking forward to that at all.

Thanks for the kind words. The flag was my Dad's casket flag - a Korean war vet.  Tucked in the bottom are three shell casing from the military salute (with real M1's).

Something I learned at the time of his funeral and I'll share here.  Can't remember the source, but here goes...

The practice of firing three rifle volleys over the grave originated in the old custom of halting the fighting to remove the dead from the battlefield. Once each army had cleared their dead, it would fire three volleys to indicate that the dead had been cared for and that they were ready to fight again. The fact that the firing party consists of seven riflemen, firing these volleys does not constitute a 21-gun-salute. It is the three volleys that are significant, not the number of rifles. Three volleys fired over the casket have become a tradition to mean the dead have been cared for. It has evolved into a military salute for the deceased serving their country. Firing the three volleys over the casket is one of the highest honors to give a deceased military veteran. Our nations highest honor is a flag draped over the casket, folded and presented. Tradition is to place three spent shell casings inside the folded flag to prove now and forevermore that the deceased and his flag have had proper military honors.

Pretty good info bk,,thanks. We have my father in laws Flag with the shells here at home and it was nice to see another on display in remembrance and honor. I've been to a few funerals but only 1 military and that was a very tough one to get through with all 3 of his little girls there.

Sorry if i changed the subject on your project bk,,,back to it,,are the drawers functional? You know your blocking a cold air return and your outlet's are upside down right?

Live and learn.
Had no idea of the significance of the volleys.
Now I know that my Father, a World War One veteran, received full honors. I was kind of young at the time, but I distinctly remember the Flag being folded and then being handed to my Mother.

Sending a karma doesn't even begin to do justice for the information. It is going to have to sink in a bit before I'll be able to process it...

No apologies needed for changing the subject to how we honor those who have served.  In my mind that is a more imporant discussion that a bit of wood hacking anyday.  So proud of my Dad and my brother, a career Air Force man who died only a year ago in an accident.  

Military funerals are moving events.  Pretty neat to know some of the symbolism behind what takes place.  A good friend of one of my nieces, an Air Force trumpet player, honored Dad by playing the taps.  It was something he wanted, real taps.  Dad always said if you could listen to taps at a funeral with a dry eye, you had no heart.  Well, I can honesty say at both Dad's funeral and my brothers, I had a heart.

Ya, hogkiller, stir the pot.  The air return is blocked a bit.  Not as much as when the piano sat there.    And the outlets are a source of discussion.  An old electrician always mounted his this way so any metal object would hit the ground before the hot.  Interstingly, electric code says nothing about what direction they should face.  My downstairs is all reversed from this.  Haven't noticed any way being better than another.  But I can say that some day I will re-mount either the upstairs or the down stairs as the mis-match drives me crazy.  (And some of use don't have far to go.)
 
Drawers are functional.  Since the table is so narrow, I made stops so the drawers can't be pulled all the way out.  Worked out pretty well.
