Now I've worked construction pretty much all my life, Roofing, residential home basements, residential construction, an currently I'm a union Iron Worker (Local 17). I can not bring my self to hold a inside job, I'd be a caged beast and would be twice as grouchy. But one thing has always erked the hell out of me, the waste I see in construction, its enormous, its unforgivable in my book. So at times I take upon myself to recycle some of these material in to things I've wanted. When out at the swamp gathering I seen CJ's home made smoker, an the gears started turning in my head, (I want one), but I didn't want to build it exactly like CJ's and claim it as my idea so this is what I came up with.
This is what she's made of, Hard wood cribbing, its oak, most likely pin oak, stacked log cabin style, this is core of my smoker build and it took some time to collect decent straight pieces. We use this stuff to land our iron on, Once the job is over all this stuff gets picked up and pitched, what a shame.
Here's what she looks like on the inside, It's not a huge smoker, just two shelves, but It was a first time build, no real plans, just building and thinking.
After I finished the log cabin stacked oak, I wanted to sheath the outside, But I wanted a certain look to it, old timey, is what I was looking for. So I sheathed her with pallet wood, all different lengths an widths, I think she came pretty good, using stuff that others were going to just pitch out.
Now seeing that I'm a hillbilly, redneck, country boy I had to put some proper decorations on it.
After all the sheathing was done I had to come up with a roof and a stack, The stack is mad from the top of one of those outdoor fire pits/container things, the small stack is a cut down welding rod tin, all painted in black grill paint.
After that I still wasn't happy with my roof, so I picked up a bundle of the shakes, 10 bucks, one bundle did the whole thing, now I think she looks better. So guessed I lied I spent 10 bucks on the whole thing, except for the shakes the whole rig is 100% recycle from the jobs I've been on, even the hinges, that I got off an old wooden job box lid some one was pitching. Now I don't have a recent pic of the burner in side, but the grill racks are in and so is the burner, those came free also from the families collection of grills at the cottage, I'll see about taking a pic and posting it up later today.
Thanks CJ, for the ideas!!!
