Chicken Plucking Solo style at the Stonehouse

I always say this Party starts and ends the same way every time. With a good cleaning of the equipment.

Cooling tank ready for the cleaned birds to arrive.

The process actually starts the night before when after dark birds are gathered up and put in crates to keep them from eating and to get the crops cleaned out.

First step is to the killin' cone to have the jugulars cut on both sides of the neck, hopefully with out cutting into the trac tube. Birds are bleed out and then into the scalding put for a couple dunks at about 140*.

When working alone I do two birds at a time, the plucker is happier with four birds in it, but with only two I can get them from killin' cone to cooler in ten mins each.


That is the way they come out of the plucker on a good rotation, and cleaned and ready for the cool tank to get temp dropped asap.

Shrink bags are used for packaging and work very well for freezer storage. I'm still eating birds from last year and they are just fine.

I assume you have a power plucker (if thats not what its called it should be ) What does that look like?

In the last pic you can see a white tub looking thang, that is my Featherman Plucker. Works Almost as good as advertised.

Treehugger has the complete deal with a rotor dunker, fancy killin' cone set up and a Helper.

Looks good farmer when I was a kid we did it all by hand ax and all most we did in one day was 40 I didn't want to look at another chicken for a few days after that
