Spent the last month busting my butt getting organized and ready for summer. Now is time to show off a bit.
Spent a lot of time last summer tearing up and re-landscaping my front yard last year, now I get to see the results pay off. Removed a hump of dirt, stumps, shrubs, and moved plants around. the borders, walkway bed, peach tree, and sunflower bed are all new.
Now on to the edible stuff. Finished tearing out my arbor vitae (hate those mosquito havens) and cranked out a few more garden boxes. Got my plumbing, hose lays, and drip system all in place as well.
View looking north with work in progress.
Beans (green and purple bush), lettuce, and jalapeno on the top, Basils and soon carrots on second. Kohlrabi will be on the third. Lettuce on the bottom.
Left box will be asian longbeans, bittermelon, and cucumbers. Probably some peas too. Right box is tomatoes and watermelon. Still need to build a teepee trellis for the beans and melon, and a box trellis for the tomatoes.
Strawberries well established. Started with 16 plants last season. Huge potential yield, just need to keep them well watered. Built a quick "squirrel protection" frame to safeguard my future harvest.
Left side is blackberries, thimble-berries, and lettuce. Right will be sweet corn, and currently lettuce. Dug out and moved the blackberry box a month or so ago, so it is a bit ragged, but recovering well.
Heavy plant of horseradish, peppers, kale, asian eggplant, and peas. There will be another box soon to it's left. I have to put together a short trellis for both for the peas.
The brain center to keep my garden watered even when I am not home. One zone is the hose on the reel. Each of the other three zones are connected to a series of three boxes grouped by anticipated water need, i.e. corn, tomatoes and strawberries are together.
Check valves for each box. Gotta stay organized, and keep hoses out of the weed whacker zone.
Drip layout. This box will be home to blue potatoes, as well as various other veggies.
Overflow and backfill for the front yard, along with extra strawberries and a blueberry.
East and north view.
North and west view.
I plant very tightly to utilize my space. I am also testing out where certain things grow best, such as peas and lettuce. Hoping to either find spots for quick growth and rotation, or delayed growth so that I can extend my season.
