Or you can use the cheap method if you have a boat and don't want to spend money on traps...... Take a soda bottle, bleach bottle.....ANY THING with a good amount of bouyancy. clean the bottles very well....not worth polluting water over a stinky turtle.
Anyway, high test fishing line tied around the handle of the bottle or cap and a hook about two feet down with half a bluegill as bait. Also take a good bit of weight on a seperate line and make sure it reaches the bottom.
It's not hard to find out when the tutle takes the bait. He'll be swimming all over and occasionally take it down. just chase him down and pull up the whole rig turtle and all.
I've caught three or four like this in my grandfathers lake.
i have been fishing a nice sized bar pit right next to the amite river. we put hoop nets out every once in a while for catfish. we use molded cheese and stink bait and most of the time there are a few turtles in the nets.
i never tried trapping turtles but my grandfather used to tell me when i was younger that he would take some high test fishing string find a small sapling next to a creek put a chunk of woodchuck on a big hook tie the string to it and throw it out in the middle of the creek and if he had a turtle on it the sapling it would be bent over that was 40 years ago dont now if it is legal nowdays what do you guys do with your turtles eat them/sell them back 20 years ago when we would find one on the side of the road we would pick it up and take it to a guy in the village he would give use 5 dollars for every one we found i have had turtle it good
