Which do you prefer when it comes to freezers? I would rather have a chest freezer, but since space is an issue we have an upright which has been automatically defrosted when the door didn't get shut all the way.
I have always had the chest freezer here. What we do is fill milk jugs with water and let them freeze. Put these on the bottom of freezer and they keep the freezer from working so hard. Plus, a thermal blanket over it adds to the insulating factor.
Bummer about your freezer getting defrosted.....I remember once when mine got unplugged by accident...talk about a cooking marathon...pots everywhere.....what I couldn't cook...I gave away!!
I like chest freezers just because they are more energy efficient...since cold air sinks, you don't lose much cold when you open it. The only bad thing is that you have to rotate your stuff.
I try to keep like things together in boxes...so if I want burger..all the different types of burger are in one box..so on. Of course, if you've got several people going in your freezer..you have to train them as well.
I also have to add that I love my vacuum sealer!! I found some burger at the bottom of the freezer this summer that was from 04...and it is still good!!

Uprights are more conveinient but less economical. Like Nutso said, when you open the door on an upright all the cold air comes pouring out the bottom like a tidal wave, and then the freezer has to start back up. I try to keep my stuff in separate boxes too. Otherwise it's a horror show trying to find sweet italian sausage through the cascade of little white packages of backstrap, burger etc. You don't have this issue with uprights because of the different shelves.

i've always had a chest freezer in the shop but the wife said she wants an upright in the house cause she's tired of digging through my critters but i see what ur saying about the upright every time u open it the cold air pours out
I have a large upright in the basement. Upstairs we have a side by side. I try to keep a week or two of meals upstairs so the freezer downstairs gets opened less frequently. I do the same as John and keep ice in the bottom of the upright.
Those vacum sealers are great, I can't imagine not owning one now. I've ate meat that has been frozen two years+
Got a side by side and a upright in the house, a chest in the shed and an upright in the fur shed and their is still nothing to eat . Wish the one in the fur shed was as full as any of the others.
