Let me PM you later when I can check our brand, I vaccuum seal about every thing, including bait to be preserved in the freezer too. I think, Vaccuum Seal brand but not sure, Steve
Any info would be good, I know they are great for Backpacking because you can make small packages that stay good withought buying all the specially made stuff.

I would also like to hear everybody chime in on this, as I'm also considering this puchase, but have heard both good and bad. I think nutso was a big advocate on these, so let's hear it Jen. ;D
I have owned the Foodsaver and I have a Black and Decker. Both are ok. The B&D was only around 60 bucks. You have to wait longer between bags with it. I'd rather have another Foodsaver.
By the way, vac sealers are one of the greatest food preservation tools ever invented! I wouldn't be without one.
Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without![/b]

Foodsaver all the way.i have the sportsman model.bags for a sealer are high ...BUT...it keeps meat so much longer.this week i got the regular and wide mouth jar sealer attachments.used them yesterday to seal up some rice.the wide mouth worked a bit better than the regular mouth....IMHO. i now can make stuff last longer...like dehydrated goods....flour...and more.i am with you Mike....i dont ever want to be without a sealer .

I have actually had deer steak keep 3 years in the freezer. And it tasted fine!
I would go with the Foodsaver as well. Unless you want to spend some more and buy one of Cabela's 'commercial' models. As far as bags, WalMart started to sell a generic brand that are just as good and a little cheaper.

Foodsaver all the way. We just had to replace ours...after at least 7 years....I can't even tell you how many deer, moose, boar, fish etc we packaged with it..... The bags are expensive, you can reuse them if you clean them well, but I think it is well worth it..I have found meat in the freezer that was over 3 years old...and was still good.

thanks for the info. Say you have a block of cheese and you open it , can you reseal the same bag? Sorry if this sounds stupid but i never used one and I remember hearing the bags were expensive. Glad to hear Wallmart has cheaper ones. ;D
As long as there is enough room to seal at the top...you can reseal the same bag over and over.
And if you get a Cabela's visa card....and buy all your gas with it (and pay the balance at the end of the month)....you can get all kinds of Cabelas points and use those to get yourself a foodsaver.....thats what my Dad did......

Ours is a "Foodsaver" also. In my opinion, they are woth every penny you pay for one. Ours has the built in bag holder, and cutter. It comes in handy to cut bags to whatever size needed.
sounds like I have the same one Badger has and before that one I had the one without the bag holder and cutter. It is one of the best investments I have purchased. Buy everything in bulk and when I get home out comes the foodsavor. I went from the foodsaver bags to the wal-mart brand and dont regret it at all they are just as good for a little less cash. I actually cooked some venison steaks at work 2 days ago and they were just as good as fresh.

I have a foodsaver......ifit fails I willleave immediately to buy another I like the brand and the tool itself. Much has been already said for three year old meat being good which I can attest to, bags pricey but reusable which I do not do but the uses are endless.........vacuum marinades either in just a sealed bag or under vaccuum in a container will do in 15 minutes what overnight will do in refridge. I cook batches of stuffed cabbage, soup stock minus noodles, chile and bag it without vacuum for hunting trips or near future use, just drop in boiling water o heat, throw bad away, dump water, no big clean up. I have a taxidermy business.......seal fish and small game and deer capes, etc....no freezer burn under vacuum I ever saw....great...slide a bird into a sealed tube and the vacuum holds the feathers against body perfectly......wish they had turkey sized bags, ostrich too (LOL), like to Kayak....seal matches and survival kit, dry clothes for a get wet adventure trapping, fishing, etc.......I like wool clothes and seal my wool clothes in storage against moth damamge........I have collected and dried garden and flower seeds and seal...good forever I think..........your mind will find uses..believe me and I will NEVER be without them. Great gifts for weddings and Christmas for family....I could probably make a living selling these I believe so strongly in them..............Mac~
foodsaver i have two of them seal all my game & fish with them if i have something i don't want air to get to i seal it or if i have something i don't want wet i seal it for you guys who take week long hunting or fishing trips out i the middle of nowhere this would come in really handy the containers you can get will keep food for quite some time this is by far one of the handiest tool i ever bought good thing come at a price sometimes
Thanks for all your input,I just bought a foodsaver, Gamesaver model in Cabelas. Had some gift certificates from the family and put them to good use. I tried it out the other night and it works great.
I'm sure it was stated already, but it helps to partially freeze some fodd before sealing. Anything like fish that may be wet,or any cuts of meat that may be a little bloody.
I called foodsaver to register my new one and found out if you call them you can buy bags cheaper than you can online. The number is 800-777-5452 . Bags usually sell for around $9 to $10 per roll and if you call you can get them in bulk for around$6. they have a special now orders over $50 get free shipping.
What is out there that works good and doesn't cost a fortune? My Dad had one and his was crap.
I had a FOODSAVOR GAME PRO --cost about 200. that stopped sucking and sealing last week, we were sealing flour, sugar and rice.. My wife ran up to Wally World 35 miles away to grab another one but they didn't have one, she got a V2420 for about 150.00. we had so much stuff to get sealed that we were between a rock and a hard spot.
I called Food Savor and they didn't want to hear anything because we didn't have the receipt, i told the jerk that the only thing we have a receipt for are the cars and truck because we have the titles. If i had receipts for everything on the place, there would be no room for the items and i'd have to hire a book keeper.
one thing for sure, if you seal flour, be careful of the dust getting into the suction hoses.
Blazor, sorry to hear your gamesaver didn't hold up. I don't know if you bought this from Cabelas or how long ago you bought it. Cabelas is usually pretty good about returning stuff. I haven't seen the gamesaver model in regular stores. Good luck.
