Looks good, Kyboy! ;D Are the buffs, orpingtons? Are these all layers or a mix? We've got 6 RIR, 4 isa brown, and 2 white rock. This is our first run with chicks, these will be our laying hens and so far it's pretty exciting. We are wanting to do a run of broilers in a couple of months.
Yes orpingtons ;D All layers. I was originally suppose to get all golden comets but they were on backorder so I picked out a mix. Glad I did honestly. Ill keep the pullets and eat the extra roosters.
All of ours are supposed to be pullets, besides the two white rocks and I picked two smaller ones out of the batch so hopefully they are pullets as well. I wanted a mix of barred rock, rhode island reds, australorps and orpingtons. Have you had the buffs before? If so, what kind of layers are they?

i have buffs and they lay the biggest brown eggs i've ever seen there even better layers the RIR's!
KY, if you put 1/4 inch hardware cloth for the bottom of your box and raise it about 4" off the floor, all you do is change the paper and don't have to disturb the chicks.
Ive never had buffs but Ive heard lots of good about them. Thats why I wanted to give them a try. there should be about 20 pullets and 7 roosters in there.
Right now, I have 35 layers. A mixed flock of Cal Whites, RIR's, Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, Americaunas, White Rocks, and Black Australorps. They are just getting going right now and I'm getting anywhere from 10-15 eggs a day. That will double in May and June probably.
The dead of winter stinks for egg laying. So does the moult. But I guess they need a break too. ;D

If you guys butcher any Barred Rock rooster, the cape of a rooster is call Grissly in fly fisherman language, A number one cape is from$50-90 for tying dryflies, if you raise chickens , there is a thought of raising them for feathers and meat. Steve
That's true Steve. I've found that your run of the mill rooster isn't worth that much, but still saleable! The guys that raise birds strictly for the hackles have been cross breeding for years to get the hackle length they do. Those are the ones that are worth big bucks.
