Hi everyone! With this world changing dramatically everyday and the government trying to run our lives me and my brother and our wives had a sit down the other night. We are looking for property and were going to combine forces and start homesteading! We've been modern country boys all our lives hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, splitting stacking firewood small livestock etc.. But I know there is alot more too it can someone recommend books for us as far as homesteading, edible wild plants of north east, preserving, canning etc.. We both have young kids so this is our 5 year plan any help would be appreciated! I know there is alot of books out there but I want experienced people to tell me what they recommend not some book store or cityit (idiot from the city)! Thank you!
Personally I think the best place to learn about stuff like this is on forums. That way you get more than ONE persons opinion and can ask questions when unsure of something. My sister is a world renown authority on edible and medicinal wild plants but most of her work revolves around plants of the north west as most of her research was done in Alaska. I think she has a small handbook on North East plants but her hard cover text are based mostly on the north west. Her name is Janice Schofield. I'm not sure who to recommend for the east.
As JC mentioned, forums are a great place to start. Also check out book stores. Personally, the best for me his hands on "training" in the field from someone who really knows what's what.
I check two forums pretty regular that deal with the homesteading topic; homesteadingtoday.com and backwoodshome.com
Both have a good amount of information in the archives. Just be aware that they are like most any other internet forum (besides this one of course) in that they have their share of goofballs.
There are hundreds if not thousands of books that deal with the subject. Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is a good one. I like Gene Logsdon a lot as well. I also recommend the Peterson and National Audubon field guides for edible and medicinal plants.
Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without![/b]
