Finally found a small patch, most only an inch or less tall, but hey, it's good to see 'em.
I left these go, in hopes they get twice their size or bigger. Should be some good hutning this weekend. Another shot of rain, the yellows with be popp'n soon

Thanks for the location tip, Jack. I'm going to check around myself. I think that it's too early up here in Wisconsin, though. You guys in the warmer states are just having them pop up recently. ;D

I picked up a few mushroom- hunting books at the library today. Some good stuff.
When I was looking into morels, they mentioned that they preferred to be around ash trees, especially if there was a mix of old and young ash trees. The ash tree has a diamond-pattern bark, which resembles the pitted and ridged structure of the morel. Also, to look down-wind of the prevailing wind in your area from where you found some. The spores travel down-wind, so you might find some more there. Also, like traprjack had mentioned, being around the rail road tracks play into this somehow. Maybe they like the train whistle!
Certain flowers blooming are indicators of when the morel season is in full swing. Among them are the Coltsfoot, White Trillium, Marsh Marigold, and the Violet. Hope you know your flowers! I know what a Trillium and Violet look like, anyway.

here i north missouri i find 90% of morels around soft maple trees, but last year sycamore and birch trees is where i found most. this year 100% around maple trees in higher ground because all of our lowlands was flooded.
In my parts here, dead or dying elm trees are the best spots, as well as cherry and apple trees. Went out Friday and found a few more, then another small batch yesterday. Some are fresh, some are past prime, and most are still greys. We probably need another shot of rain here, but it don't look like rain for another week Guess I'll be getting the garden in over the next few days

Thanks for the input, CJ. I appreciate it. ;D I found some that I think are oyster mushrooms. I'll take a sample and compare it to my books. Supposed to be pretty tasty, but I want to be sure what it is first.
Only had time to poke around the woods yesterday for a 1/2 hour Too many projects to get done on the homestead. Only found one grey while out. Will be hitting a section hard after work today though
I'm gonna get back out and see how much some of the little ones I found last week have grown.
The way the forecast is looking...next weekend should have the shroomers around here finding plenty. Another shower or two wouldn't hurt anything. Supposed to be a pretty good chance for more rain this Thursday/Friday. Highs in the lower-mid 70's and lows in the upper 40's-lower 50's all week. ;D ;D
I never get paid what I think I should for my fur so I blame nafa and everyone else... except Steve.
