was wondering if anyone grows there own mushrooms? such as Shiitakes,Wine Caps,Oysters,Lion Manes, etc.Have gotten a catalog from Field & Forest Products that has a lot of info.It is something I keep wanting to try.any help?
I think Mike692 grows them from kits he bought. Pretty sure it was him that posted about this before. I have always considered this myself as I have a dark and damp crawlspace under the homestead. It would be nice to utilize it for something other than growing spiders.

the wife and I did some research and are going to give it a shot this year. We purchased 600 plugs of a variety of different kinds of mushroom. There are many different ways to grow them. We decided to use 4' oak logs framed out and stacked up on top to a height of about 3'. Each 4' log takes about 50 plugs. I dropped a 8'' diameter white oak yesterday. you need to wait 3-4 weeks for the tree to lose its natural mushroom killing defense before you insert the plugs. Coniferous stands make for a good mushroom habitat. hopefully by fall we'll have some mushrooms, but it might not be a good harvest until next year.

Me and my dad did some must have been last summer maybe the one before anyway we get a great yeild on them i cant remember what they were called but now he is going crazy about finding them on trees in the wild haha idk what it is about the mushrooms but he loves it
I've grown oysters with thimble and plug spawn with great success. Mostly on poplar, but some on soft maple too. I have some shiitake going as well. They produced a fair amount of mushrooms last fall, and were still going when it froze up. The shiitake were plugged into maple, and cherry. I ordered all of my spawn from Field and Forest in Wisconsin. They sell a good product.
Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without![/b]
