Question For Wood Stove Users

Hey guys,

  I'm planning to install a wood stove in my small hunting shack in the spring and was wondering about some good ideas you've come up with for a home-made hearth, rather than spending the  $60-400 on the commercial ones available at the stores. I've thought of maybe using fire bricks under/behind it, but that might end up costing as much as the cheaper pads.

What have you all done on the cheap? Pics welcome, of course!

I used concrete board behind and under my Bakers Choice wood cookstove. I then used a bunch of discount tile from Home Depot over the board and cemented in. I did the same for my other woodstove, but used tile I purchased when in Mexico. A lot of color to it. Bright!! If I ever get this pic thing figured out I will post pics.

Thanks, Jack. I'm not familiar with concrete board, is that sold in sheets like drywall? Sounds like a good idea on the discount tiles over it!

yes it is, i think alot of people use it actually for this purpose.

3x5sheets.Get the 1/2 inch if possible. They sell it in the tile aisle usually at the box hardware stores.Don't forget the screws too.

In case you haven't already installed that woodstove.

One time made a frame of 2x4's, on edge, plenty big enough so the wood wouldn't be too close to the heat. Lined the frame with visqueen & then filled it with gravel. Seen other setups where they used sand or just plain dirt instead.
