Birds takin' a bath video

Hey Swampers.  Been playing around with a little video camera I picked up.  Original use was for waterfowl hunting but figured I better play a bit with it first before season.  Set this up on the stream portion of my back yard pond.  Have to say, I think I'm addicted and will be trying to increase a variety of different birds.  Please feel free to give your thoughts, suggestions, etc.

Thanks Brad for your kind words and karma.  To answer your question, its a decorative pond, roughly 15'x8' and 30" deep (in the deepest spot).  Fish, yes...Koi both common and butterfly.  Great entertainment for the whole family, which is a bonus...its helping the Wildlife which I think is the real reward.

Thanks nytrapper23.  I'm really getting into it.  Made a tripod mount of sorts out of some conduit and an old 3 legged halogen light stand to hold the camera at different levels so that if I want to capture video of what is going into my bird houses or hummingbirds at a feeder, it's easy enough to adjust.  (Have some footage of both, the Hummingbirds as well as some Wrens).  The camera I'm using is the ActionCam by PED.  It's the size of a zippo lighter.

Thank you pipewrench.  You are all far to kind.  Its really enjoyable and neat to see what shows up when not around the pond.  Would like to obtain some footage of an Indigo Bunting as well as Bluebirds.  They're around....just if I'll be lucky enough to capture them.  We will see!

Brad assisted me and said to past the YouTube link in the "Movie/Video" icon to the right of the image. The Hummingbird footage was actually a direct link from photobucket. Hope that helps. Let me know if it woks

I bought a generic GoPro, Camera, accessories, 32GB Micro Card and 2 years replacement plan for only $114 delivered to my door. Only time will tell???

rendezvous - thanks for sharing.  I would be really interested to hear your thoughts on the product as well as see some footage.  Was at a local retailer whom had an Emerson camera that was along the GoPro design for $40 new in the box.  Will have to do some research on that (no memory card included)

Here is a shot of my actioncam that I've been using.



There is a cover I can put on to keep water off but it is not submersible.  Uses a 16G micro card.  Also has a super strong magnetic base and I've made some "L" brackets to put on some conduit for different levels and allows me to be able to put the camera at various angles for above and below shots.  Working on some Wren and also was able to get some Bluebird footage yesterday of a male and female utilizing one of the house I have on my homestead.  Happy to share when edited if anyone is interested.

No remote.  Just a simple push to record button.  Records in 1080 or 720.  Mine is set up 720/60.  With what I'm doing, I set it up with a blank card and let it run.  Record time is 2hrs so, since I work from home, I set it up where I would like to take footage, press play and then walk away.  (I have it set up right now at a platform bird feeder I build that's 5' in the air.  (made a stand that allows me to have the camera at different heights if needed).  Just looked outside and noticed there is a Mourning Dove feeding there.  Can post video later if you'd like to see it.

For editing, I've self taught myself to use Windows Movie Maker.  Free program and relatively basic.  There are transition options, fade in/out, add copy/text.  Found out you can add music, increase certain audio, lower others, etc.  That's part of the excitement is how the end product comes out in the end.  For the footage, I find myself watching it directly from the little camera that I use and while viewing it, when I see a segment that I would like to capture, I write down the time stamp so that I can go back quickly and edit that portion. 

My 9 year old is having fun coming up with ideas on what to record to see what we can do next.  For his last 3rd grade "Share" day, he asked me to make a compilation of the Birds bathing, hummingbirds, wren house and bluebirds so that he could share with his classmates today.  Apparently it went well.  (It's up on my YouTube channel)

I set up a YouTube channel also a while ago so that I could share with family/friends and also so that I don't have all the storage on my CPU.  Feel free to check it out and subscribe.  On YouTube, my channel is Fish04it  (that's a zero, not an O).  There's a number of short videos and things I just played around with.

To put your video on YouTube, you have to be logged in and once logged in, there's an "Upload Icon" on the top right of the screen.  once you click that, you should be able to drag your video to the webpage and it should upload for you.  Larger the file, the longer it takes.   Please feel free and ask any questions.  I'm new at this video stuff and won't know it all but will help me learn new things also.

I'll  see if I can get some different footage for you. What is on the video was just a touch as they are really active around that particular house. There is even a wren that built a nest in the tongue of my godevil boat trailer!

We were up here maybe two years or so & something was wrong? Felt wrong...

Was watching some TV program about Roger Tory Peterson on some island out in the Great Lakes, I think. Realized what was wrong.

We don't have all that many songbirds up here, & we were missing the day-to-day background sounds of the various songbirds!!!

Enjoy seeing your videos & hearing the various birds, really miss them! 

Don't want to start anything, but if you have nuthatches in your area, ...could I put in a request???

On another note, don't know much about those e-books (Nooks?) and maybe it has already been done?

That's very interesting Topper and can only imagine.  A real eye opener actually...something I think a lot of people take for granted and won't realize what it is until is is no longer. 

Thank you for your kind words about the videos.  I'm super new to doing it but as said before, having a blast compiling the different footage, trying different set ups, editing, re-editing and then finally sharing.  It would be a pleasure to see if I could collect some Nuthatch footage for you.  Here, we have both the White Breasted Nuthatch as well as the Red Breasted Nuthatch but the Red Breasted are less frequent visitors on my homestead.  They will definitely be a challenge to capture enough footage for a decent video but a challenge I accept    Would also like to see if I could gather some Tufted Titmouse footage. 

Regarding an Bid ID Ap, I would suggest trying to see if you are able to download the Cornell Lab "Merlin" Ap.  Great ap and has a lot of different audio and ways to ID different birds.
