When I was a kid we had a cave (root cellar) that we kept a big wash tub of worm bedding in. The night crawlers lived and bread all winter in there. It sure was nice to know we had a constant supply of them. Anymore I keep them in the "bait" fridge but I still like the worm bedding (the shredded newspaper kind) to keep them lively. I've tried the kind that is more like dirt but it gets your "fishin' rag" dirty too fast. I sure wish I had one of them caves now.
When I was a kid I started out with a cooler full of the bedding with nightcrawlers and redworms in it. Now I have a fridge that dosent work. I burried it in the ground with the door facing the sky. The door is about at ground level. I never run out of worms now.

When I was a kid, my uncle owned a bait company and we used to dig worms, pick crawlers and trap shiners for him. I picked crawlers all the time when I was a kid and got really fast at it. We would have a coolwhip container hanging by a string around our neck, and with a headlight we could pick with two hands, and then dump em into a 5 gallon pail and start over. We made really good money. We'd dig all day and pick at night, plus trap shiners and crawdads. My friend and I also sold to another bait dealer as well. My older brother and my cousin started calling us the master-baiters. They even wrote it on our buckets. We were too young to understand what the joke was about. They'd laugh and laugh and off we'd go picken into the night all happy happy until the truth was finally exopsed. A year or two later we got to play the same trick on a couple other young-uns. What comes around - goes around I guess
ADC, I built a big screened in box, about 4'x11/2x11/2', and buried it in the ground, with the hinged lid flush with the grass, and filled it with worm bedding. Works great for bait storage, and they do breed.
I don't know guys I like the idea of the bruied boxes but I live atop a hill I'm thinking the boxes would have to be buried awfully deep. I sometimes have to go to the city park to collect the crawlers in the first place cause the ground dries so fast here. What kind of screen do you use CJ?
JC I'm sure you're still a master-baiter. Once you learn the art of "baiting" you'll never forget. lol
Hey JC Ill take my camera out and get a picture for you to put up today. There is a bait shop down the road. This is where I get all my goldfish and whatever else I cant catch for bait. It is called "master bait shack" . I dont think the guy even knows why we laugh all of the time.
I even asked him once if he meant for it to be like that and his response was "be like what?"

MOST of the pictures I have seen posted on here would cure a guy of that habit. I look at too many more of those photos and the hair on my palm will start falling out!

Actually when we saw the sign "master bait shack open 24 hours" I wasnt sure if it was a bait shop or a place for lonly late night truckers to relieve some stress.
They have since re-painted the sign and I think they replaced the word "shack" with "shop".
My wife is in town and I have the kids. I have the camera right here and im heading for the shop as soon as she gets home.
