As most of you know, I exhibit at a lot of sportsman's shows throughout the year selling my art. I do pretty well for the most part but there's still a good deal of folks that walk by my booth that couldn't give a fiddlers fart about wildlife art. I've been thinking about taking on some other merchandise to make my booth more attractive to a wider audience. Selling traps is way too cumbersome and targets a pretty small percentage of the crowd. Over the past year I've talked with a lot of people about food plot and habitat enhancement projects, and have heard a great deal of positive responses about the goods from the Heartland Wildlife Institute. This company was created by a group of wildlife biologist and they specialize in producing forage products for northern climates. I've always had a strong interest in habitat enhancement but never had much success with using products from the leading seed suppliers. I've talked with others who had similar results but never understood why, or what the difference was between one seed company and another until I got to spend numerous hours discussing this with a Heartland Representative. Well aware of the importance of good genetics in whitetails, I had never given it any thought whatsoever in plant matter. Some plot forage may be hearty in northern climates but if the seeds origin in from Mississippi or Texas, it just won't have the frost tolerant capabilities as a seed originating from a northern zone. Heartlands seeds originate from places like Idaho, Manitoba, Oregon, North Dakota, etc. Aside from the origin of the seed, I found the ingredients of brassicas, sub terranean clovers, winter peas, forage soybeans and hybrid turnips to be equally impressive. They have a special bird blend that I'm looking forward to planting. This blend consist of sorgum, peas, millets, sunflower, buckwheat and soybeans and the species selected grow and ripen at different stages providing a long term food source. This should provide an awesome habitat for turkeys, pheasant and songbirds as well. Needless to say - I was so impressed with the Heartland products that I signed on as a dealer and I'll be adding their product line to retail offerings.
